Compare two texts
Your texts stay on your computer. Nothing is uploaded.
- 0bytes uploaded: the comparison runs on your device, even offline.
- 3levels of detail: line, word, character.
- 100%free: no account, no cookies, no ads.
Paste or drop two texts: their differences will appear here.
Paste a first version on the left and a second one on the right: difftool.fr instantly highlights what was removed, added or changed. The comparison runs entirely in your browser. Your texts are not sent to any server, nothing is stored, and the tool keeps working if you go offline.
How to compare two texts
- Paste the original text in the left box, or open a file.
- Paste the changed version in the right box.
- The differences appear below as soon as you stop typing.
The “Load an example” button fills both boxes with a short edited contract, so you can see the result without preparing anything.
How to read the result
- Red, with a −: what was removed or replaced in the original text. Removed words are also struck through.
- Blue, with a +: what was added in the changed text. Added words are also underlined.
- Hatching marks the place of a line that only exists on one side.
- The summary counts lines added, removed and changed, and gives a similarity percentage: the share of content the two texts have in common, ignoring whitespace.
The “Previous” and “Next” buttons (or Alt+↑ and Alt+↓) jump from one difference to the next — handy in a long document where changes are scattered.
Comparison settings
- By word (the default): best for prose, contracts and articles.
- By line: each line is compared as a whole, then changed words are highlighted inside it. Best for code and lists.
- By character: to spot a typo, a moved comma or a different apostrophe.
- Ignore case, leading and trailing spaces, all whitespace or blank lines when those differences don’t matter to you.
- Hide identical lines to keep only the changed passages, with three lines of context around each.
Your settings are remembered in your browser for next time. Your texts never are.
Frequently asked questions
Are my texts sent anywhere?
No. The differences are computed in your browser, on your computer or phone. No text or file is sent to difftool.fr or anyone else, and nothing is stored: closing the page erases everything. See the privacy page for details.
Do I need an account, or to pay?
No. The tool is free, with no sign-up, no ads and no cookies.
Can I compare Word or PDF files?
Yes. Open or drop each document in a box: difftool.fr reads Word (.docx) and PDF files, extracts their text in your browser and compares it, without the formatting. The document is never uploaded. A scanned PDF, which only contains an image, cannot be read.
Can I save or print the result?
Yes. “Print / PDF” prints all the differences or saves them as a PDF from your browser’s print dialog. “Copy diff” and “Download .diff” produce a unified diff that developer tools such as patch understand.
How long can the texts be?
Up to 10 MB per text file (20 MB for Word and PDF), which is thousands of pages. Two documents of 10,000 lines are compared in under a second on a recent computer. Above one million characters, the comparison no longer runs as you type: click “Compare”.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a small screen the two boxes are stacked, and the “Unified” view shows the differences in a single column that is easier to read.
